Obituary of Kenneth J. Muckey
Toulon—Kenneth J. Muckey, 88, of Toulon, died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, August 19, 2010, at Toulon Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.
Kenneth was born at home, in Toulon, IL, on May 7, 1922, the son of Phillip Muckey, Sr. and Effie Strong Muckey. He married Florence M. Bayer February 13, 1943, in Kahoka, MO. She survives.
Surviving are daughter, Judy (Bill) Price of Toulon; son, Jerry (Brenda) Muckey of Kewanee; four grandchildren, Jody (Lee Pyle) Kitterman, Ken Price, Sr., Jeff (Audrey Johnson) Muckey, Kendra (Matt) Taylor; five great-grandchildren, Nikki (Joe) Leeper, Hayley (Lucus Pierce) Kitterman, Sara Kitterman, Ken Price, Jr., and Cody Price; two great-great-grandchildren, Donavon Pierce and Ashlynn Leeper. Extended family, Jeff and Joey Vitale, Jarrod and Sara Johnson, and Keith Johnson. Also surviving is his sister, Evelyn (the late Donald) Orwig, and sister- in- law, Irene (the late Phillip Jr.) Muckey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Phillip Muckey, Jr.
Prior to his military service, his first job was with Wrigly (Sam) Lumber Yard located in Toulon. Ken was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in WWII. In 1942, Ken was drafted into the U.S. Army serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received a Good Conduct Medal and was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with Four Bronze Stars. During his service career, Muckey was a mechanic and truck driver in the Red Ball Express Truck Company driving supplies to the field and bringing back prisoners. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 with the rank of Tec. 5 Sergeant. Ken was a 64 year member of both the Toulon American Legion Post #416 and Toulon V.F.W.
After returning home, he and his brother began the Muckey Brothers Construction Co. where he was co-owner, and partner, retiring in 1987.
Ken’s hobbies and interest included, fishing, making bird houses, collecting antiques, mowing, playing cards, garage sales, but more importantly, spending time with family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at Toulon Cemetery. Rev. Wayne McLeod will officiate. Cremation has been accorded.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Toulon, Toulon Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, St. Jude’s or to a charity of the Donor’s choice.
